COBALT collaborative approach with the AMC Network
COBALT, based in Clontarf, Queensland, specialises in producing Sucker Rod Guides (SRG) for the oil and gas industry. Recognising the need to optimise their manufacturing processes, they engaged with AMC Network to develop a comprehensive strategy to enhance production scalability and efficiency.
Challenge
COBALT encountered significant challenges, including limitations of their current forklifts and high levels of manual labour in rod marking and handling. These issues contributed to a lengthy lead time of approximately 4.2 hours from initial operations to final packaging, along with increased safety risks for employees due to excessive manual tasks.
Approach
During a day-long workshop, AMC Network utilised co-design methodologies to collaborate with COBALT staff. The result was a set of six strategic recommendations aimed at reducing human interaction and enhancing productivity: upgrading to an 8-tonne forklift, automating rod positioning, implementing rack extensions, utilising assisted lifting devices, and exploring automation for final packaging. Additional referrals included partnerships with Swinburne University’s Factory of the Future to further augment operational efficiency.
Outcome
The proposed integration of cobotics solutions is anticipated to significantly decrease lead times and alleviate the physical demands placed on workers. By minimising manual tasks and enhancing automation in key areas, COBALT is positioned to improve overall production throughput, ensure higher safety standards, and empower employees to engage in more skilled, technical roles, ultimately supporting their growth objectives in a competitive market.
