Stratoship: Pioneering Stratospheric Communications and Monitoring
The ARM Hub is helping Stratoship commercialise equipment that will transform high-altitude monitoring capabilities.
CHALLENGE
Stratoship is a Brisbane start-up that has designed and manufactured a remotely piloted high-altitude airship to carry equipment into the stratosphere and remain fixed for extended periods.
It is designed to provide real-time, high-resolution data to organisations looking for continuous communications for localised areas (e.g. bush fires).
The airship is payload agnostic and can hold equipment at 20km – twice the height of airlines.
It addresses current challenges with sporadic and unreliable monitoring systems, such as satellites and earth observation cameras.
what the arm hub did
Stratoship is working with the Australian Manufacturing Capability Network (AMCN), led by the ARM Hub, on its IGP application.
Stratoship is also a valued tenant at the ARM Hub Learning Factory in Brisbane.
New APPROACH
Stratoship is currently proving out the technology, which is an Australian-first. In particular, it is working to ensure the airship is gas-tight during manufacture as the rate at which helium escapes limits the time it can spend in the atmosphere.
Stratoship is also working to improve the airship’s design and assurance, leading to aviation certification.
The company has applied to the Australian Government’s Industry Growth Program (IGP) for funding to streamline and/or automate the production process to reduce time and deliver consistent quality.
